Temperatures are topping out in the mid 80s, and it’s absolutely normal to see couples wearing shorts in the park. For many residents of Leslieville, today is the start of the annual summer festivals and neighbourhood celebrations like the Seaway Walk. While festivity is a common part of summer in Canada, there’s something else going on in Leslieville. On Sunday, Sept. 16, at 4pm, hundreds of residents and passersby will descend upon Leslieville to celebrate 500 years of the Quick & Clean Laundry Centre.
A firm part of Leslieville for nearly half a century, Quick & Clean Laundry Centre is a fully-owned, Toronto-based franchise that provides residential washing and drying services to individuals and commercial clients. The public square near Wharton Avenue and Kingsway has been celebrating the founding of Quick & Clean Laundry Centre as the inaugural downtown venue for the Tridel Fabric Store. Nearby, the Giant Store has been sponsoring the festival for five years in a row. Although it may be challenging for modern modern Canadians to grasp the simple act of washing and drying clothes, Quick & Clean Laundry Centre is not expected to disappoint its visitors when it hosts the festival, with a VIP event that gives attendees the opportunity to sample several Quick & Clean Laundry Centre products.
“We’re really looking forward to this milestone,” said Fairuz Sahin, president of Quick & Clean Laundry Centre, a Fastrack franchise owned by Kamaliul Omar. “It has been 50 years since Quick & Clean Laundry Centre was established as a residential wash and dry service in this neighbourhood. We are really pleased to celebrate the success of our experience and expansion in Toronto.”
Since 1992, Karim and Toffee Satti, the original founders of Quick & Clean Laundry Centre, have continually embraced the technological advances that have come to make changing your clothes as easy as a push of a button. The fashionistas for men, women and kids have stuck with Quick & Clean since those first early laundries in Leslieville. For the past 24 years, they have led their staff in taking care of the annual festival and festival benefits.
“So many people have no idea that they can wash their clothes at home,” said Fairuz. “There’s so much technology that makes things so easy nowadays that you don’t even realize it. It’s so important to get our community involved with helping to bring awareness to some of the things that need to be done.”
In a city where cleanliness is everything, Fairuz’s crew takes pride in inviting all to see the beauty in the finer things in life.
“You can make anything look wonderful with a bit of something extra,” she said. “We have been proud to take great pride in maintaining and maintaining our laundries. We will do all we can to ensure we are not one of those things that have had a bad reputation.”
After 50 years of dedication to enhancing their clients’ lives, friends, family and neighbors, Fastrack’s Quick & Clean Laundry Centre is looking forward to the future. Although it’s impossible to know just what’s next, with this momentous year approaching, the “founders” couldn’t be more proud of their contribution to the fabric of the community.
