Outed as a celebrity on ‘Friends,’ TV’s Gunther remembered

Mr. Tyler was well-known as Gunther on Friends, having portrayed the unsung but popular bowling alley bouncer since the show’s start in 1994. Gunther’s popularity exploded in 1999 when he discovered that his shopping buddy Stef (Lisa Kudrow) was expecting a baby with her boyfriend, who, months later, ended up marrying Stef. Gunther then reportedly broke the news to his lover, Ross Geller (David Schwimmer). It was Gunther’s feud with ex-friend Burt (Robert Klein) that propelled the character to a top role on the series.

Tyler recently took part in People’s Small Biz Travel Awards. Pictured here are actor Robert Klein and host Richard Quest.

Gunther was reportedly one of the original V.I.P. extras cast for the show, as NBC tested each regular to see which character could be manipulated most to its eye. Upon the show’s conclusion, Tyler had a recurring role on Days of Our Lives in 2000.

Tyler also appeared on shows including Spin City, GH, ER, ER: The Second Shift, Numb3rs, as well as recurring roles on The L Word, Nip/Tuck, Damages, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and several CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episodes.
